NAVI MUMBAI: Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) received a shot in the arm with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis assuring in the legislative assembly that PMC would be elevated to the rank of a corporation.
CM's was responding to a question raised by the local MLA Prashant Thakur who argued in favour of its elevated status. With limited funds in hand, the PMC has many limitations to launch major development projects.
An upgradation to the status of corporation will bring in more revenue and give infrastructural boost to the area, said MLA Thakur.
Civic officials believe that the chief minister's statement would begin another round of debate over the issue of upgrading the municipal council and it would some time before a final call is taken. Chief officer Mangesh Chitale said that that the council did not receive any official communications on this matter so far.
Over the years, PMC had been demanding to upgrade its status to a municipal corporation after amalgamating the Cidco-governed nodes adjoining Panvel. A few years back, the civic body had unanimously passed a resolution and submitted it to the state government.
Established in 1852, the PMC is the oldest municipality in Maharashtra.
